The Issue

We, the residents, parents, workers and visitors who rely on the A4042 between Llanfrechfa and Llanyravon, are calling for urgent safety improvements to protect pedestrians, cyclists and motorists travelling to and from The Grange University Hospital and surrounding communities.

Following a recent fatal collision on this stretch of the A4042, long-standing concerns from local residents have reached a critical point. For years, people living nearby have warned that this section of dual carriageway — particularly between the Turnpike and Crown roundabouts — presents serious dangers for both drivers and pedestrians.

This road is used daily by hospital staff, patients, schoolchildren, and families travelling between Llanfrechfa, Llanyravon and Cwmbran. Yet those needing to cross the road or join the carriageway often face fast-moving traffic, limited safe crossing points, and junction layouts that create confusion and risk.

The existing subway near Turnpike roundabout is widely considered unsafe by many residents, leading people — including children — to attempt crossing at road level instead. There is currently no clearly safe and accessible route for pedestrians travelling between communities and essential services such as schools and the hospital.

Residents also report dangerous conditions when joining the A4042 from minor roads, particularly Crown Road, where visibility and traffic speed make safe merging extremely difficult.

The recent tragedy has reinforced what our community has been saying for years: this road needs urgent safety intervention before more lives are lost.

We are therefore calling on the Welsh Government and relevant transport authorities to:

Conduct an immediate and comprehensive road safety review of the A4042 between Turnpike and Crown roundabouts.

Install a safe pedestrian crossing solution, such as a controlled crossing, overpass bridge, or improved crossing infrastructure near key access points.

Consider installing a central safety partition or barrier to help control pedestrian crossing points and reduce dangerous movements across the dual carriageway.

Improve lighting, signage, and visibility at junctions and pedestrian routes.

Work with local schools, the community, and transport authorities to establish safe walking routes to education and essential services, including The Grange University Hospital.

Publish and review collision and speed data to ensure safety risks are identified and addressed proactively.

This petition is not about blame — it is about prevention. Our community simply wants to ensure that residents, patients, hospital staff, and children can travel safely without risking their lives.

We urge the Welsh Government and transport authorities to act now before another tragedy occurs.
