Update Consumption Laws to Include the Cannabis Community - Let us have events

The Issue

We, the passionate advocates for cannabis legalization, are united in launching this petition to earnestly urge lawmakers, authorities, and particularly the governor of Colorado, Jared Polis, and Mike Johnston the Mayor of Denver, to grant public access to cannabis on par with alcohol consumption. Our goal is to create a balanced and just approach to cannabis regulation, while safeguarding the interests of small businesses and promoting responsible adult consumption. Our personal commitment to this issue is evident as we organize Stoner Cinema events, offering a unique avenue for responsible cannabis enjoyment in a cinema setting.

In the past, there were licenses that allowed for designated cannabis consumption areas. However, these licenses have been done away with, leaving responsible cannabis consumers and event throwers to go underground with limited options. Colorado's laws regarding cannabis consumption and designated areas are complex and require urgent reform to reflect the evolving landscape of cannabis acceptance.

**Why should public access be granted?**

1. **Economic Benefits:** Legalizing recreational cannabis, as demonstrated in Colorado, has the potential to significantly boost revenue. To date, the Colorado's Department of Revenue reports legal marijuana sales exceeding $14 billion. The economic opportunities that legalized cannabis presents can invigorate local economies.

2. **Public Health Impact:** Research has consistently shown that cannabis poses fewer risks than alcohol in terms of addiction and overdose-related fatalities (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism). By regulating cannabis with age restrictions and consumption guidelines similar to those for alcohol, we can mitigate the harms associated with excessive drinking.

3. **Social Justice Reform:** The history of the war on drugs has disproportionately impacted marginalized communities due to harsh penalties related to cannabis offenses (ACLU). Legalization and regulation offer a chance to rectify these injustices and redirect resources towards pressing societal issues.

4. **Public Opinion:** A 2023 Gallup poll reveals that 68% of Americans support legalizing marijuana for recreational use. This growing acceptance underscores the evolving societal views on cannabis, emphasizing the need for legislation that reflects public sentiment.

**However, it's disheartening to note that:**

Generations before us have also rallied for equitable cannabis access, yet years later, we find ourselves echoing the same plea. Despite progress, we continue to face a disparity between cannabis and alcohol.

**We also urge recognition of the disparity:**

Since cannabis legalization, a concerning imbalance has emerged. While cannabis slowly gains acceptance, the state seems to actively promote alcohol. For example, people under the age of 21 may enter or remain in a licensed alcohol business. The city of Denevr through Red Rocks Amphitheater State Park, sells beers and cocktails for about $10 a drink as well as do other venues like Fiddlers Green amphitheater, the Ogden, The Fillmore, and more. Alcohol's accessibility has expanded to include grocery stores, gas stations, art galleries, adults can even order beer or liquor deliveries from their couches, highlighting the need for cannabis to be treated similarly.

**By granting public access to cannabis, just like alcohol, we can:**

- Foster an inclusive society that respects individual choices and promotes responsible cannabis use.

- Protect small businesses from being overshadowed by larger corporations.

- Recognize the potential economic and social benefits of responsible cannabis consumption.

**Join us in signing this petition:** Together, let's propel the movement towards treating cannabis like alcohol in terms of public access for responsible adult consumption. We advocate for a future where the benefits of legalization are realized, and individuals can engage with cannabis without fear or stigma.

**Who is impacted?**

Every responsible cannabis consumer, event organizer, and advocate is profoundly affected by the disparity in treatment between cannabis and alcohol consumption. This includes individuals who participate in Stoner Cinema events, where adults come together to enjoy films while responsibly consuming cannabis. As passionate advocates, we have experienced firsthand how outdated regulations prevent us from fully enjoying cannabis in social settings while adhering to responsible consumption practices.

**What is at stake?**

The continuation of this inequality carries significant consequences for both individuals and society at large. If this problem persists, responsible cannabis consumers are forced into the shadows, limiting their ability to partake in public events and social gatherings. Furthermore, small businesses, including event throwers, face the risk of being overshadowed by larger corporations that could exploit the discrepancy for their advantage. Without change, the potential economic benefits of legalized cannabis may be hindered, as outdated regulations continue to stifle growth and innovation.

**Why is now the time to act?**

The urgency for immediate action cannot be overstated. Countless advocates before us have tirelessly pushed for equitable cannabis access, yet the same plea persists. Now, more than ever, society's views on cannabis are evolving, supported by data that underscores its benefits and potential. With public sentiment shifting towards acceptance, it's essential for lawmakers and authorities, including the Mayor of Denver, Mike Johnston, and the Governor of Colorado, Jared Polis to take action and rectify this discrepancy.

**By addressing this issue now, we can foster an environment where responsible cannabis consumers can enjoy their chosen substance just like alcohol, promoting inclusivity and responsible consumption.**
