The Issue

We are writing collectively as coaches and parents within the SYC 9-11 year-old division for Flag Football to express our concern regarding the participation of the Raiders team.

First, we want to make clear that these concerns are not directed toward the Raiders players or coaching staff personally. The players are talented and well-coached. Our concern instead centers on whether the Raiders team, as currently constructed, aligns with the purpose and competitive expectations of a recreational division designed to promote balanced competition, equal opportunity, player development, sportsmanship, and a positive experience for all participants.

Throughout the season, the Raiders have consistently demonstrated a level of play significantly beyond the competitive level of the remainder of the division. Multiple coaches independently observed that the roster appears more comparable to a travel or tournament-caliber team than a traditionally drafted recreational team.

Several concerns have consistently been raised by coaches across multiple teams:

  • Most of the Raider players are from a previously existing basketball team and were not subject to the standard draft process and available to be drafted by the coaches of other teams.
  • The Raiders team was not discussed during the draft process despite operating at a significantly higher competitive level.
  • The Raiders have mercy-ruled every opponent they have faced.
Unlike the rest of the teams in the division, the Raiders do not appear to have varying levels of skill and athletic ability; rather, the entire roster appears to be comprised of players who can play and compete at a high level.
  • Coaches and parents have expressed concerns regarding competitive imbalance, player safety, and the overall recreational experience.
  • Multiple coaches believe the current situation conflicts with SYC’s goals regarding competitive balance and equal opportunity.

We fully recognize that the regular season is nearly concluded, and we respect that all registered players and families committed time and resources to participate. However, we strongly believe that postseason play should reflect fair recreational competition among teams that were formed and managed under the same rules, procedures, and expectations.

Accordingly, we respectfully ask the league to consider the following possible courses of action:

  1. Exclude the Raiders from playoff eligibility while still allowing the team to participate in a separate exhibition or “All-Star” game against a team composed of players from the remaining division teams.  A playoff between the other division teams would promote a greater level of fairness for a recreational-level league.  At the same time, an All-Star game would demonstrate respect for the Raiders by allowing them to play against some of the division’s better players, hopefully resulting in a more competitive contest, and would allow the other coaches to honor key contributors.
  2. Review and clarify league policies regarding:
    - Draft participation
    - Team formation procedures
    - Eligibility requirements
    - Age verification
    - Competitive balancing standards

Our intention is not to punish talented players or diminish their accomplishments. Rather, our goal is to preserve fairness, safety, competitive balance, and the integrity of the recreational program for all participants, both now and in future seasons.

We respectfully ask the league to seriously consider these concerns and to work collaboratively with coaches and families to establish clearer policies and safeguards moving forward.
