I have witnessed firsthand the damage caused by the lack of adequate training for court-appointed child custody evaluators. Families have suffered due to decisions made by a guardian ad litem (GAL) who possessed only a high school diploma and a few training sessions. This glaring deficiency in understanding family dynamics, mental health issues, domestic violence, and the lifelong impact of their decisions is deeply troubling.

Currently, in Indiana, individuals with nothing more than a high school diploma and minimal training can be assigned to make crucial family evaluations. This negligence is causing irreparable harm to our families. As a concerned citizen, I fear the emotional toll this will have not only on the current generation but also on future ones.

GALs in Indiana are granted the authority to threaten and coerce parents, with no governing body to oversee these decisions. This needs to change.

It is time to institute a change. We urge the judicial system of Indiana to mandate formal education and professional qualifications for court-appointed child custody evaluators.
