Diesel’s Story: A Plea for a Second Chance

Diesel arrived at the Santa Fe Animal Humane Society in January 2026, his owners forced to surrender him due to circumstances beyond his control. As I worked with Diesel during my time at the shelter, I witnessed firsthand his capacity for love and companionship. Despite his rough start, Diesel’s resilience shone through, and he quickly won the hearts of volunteers and staff alike.

I had the privilege of taking Diesel on a Hounds Around Town (HAT) outing on February 3, 2026. During our adventure, Diesel proved to be an exemplary companion, walking effortlessly on his leash and reveling in the attention of passersby. His ability to form connections with those around him was truly inspiring, and I was struck by his unwavering loyalty.

Diesel’s popularity soon led to his adoption on March 2, 2026. However, despite the adopters’ initial enthusiasm, they failed to provide the necessary care and attention, disregarding the shelter’s recommendations for his transition. Tragically, this oversight led to an incident on March 5, 2026, in which Diesel, feeling cornered and threatened, defended himself.

In the aftermath of this event, Diesel was returned to the shelter, where he was placed in quarantine. Despite the outpouring of support from volunteers and staff, the decision was made to euthanize him. I, along with many others, was deeply troubled by this decision, and I firmly believe that Diesel deserves a second chance.

Diesel’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of compassion, understanding, and patience. As animal lovers, it is our responsibility to speak out on behalf of those who cannot advocate for themselves. I urge everyone to join me in fighting for Diesel’s right to life, love, and a forever home. Let us come together to provide him with the care and support he so desperately needs. Diesel’s future is in our hands, and I have faith that, together, we can create a brighter tomorrow for this incredible animal.
