The Issue

Over the past few years, the City of Fremont has made significant investments in expanding bike lanes, often by reducing vehicle lanes on major roads. While promoting alternative transportation is an important goal, many residents have raised concerns about the real-world impact of these changes on traffic flow, commute times, safety, and overall road efficiency.

At present, there is limited publicly available, up-to-date data demonstrating whether these bike lane implementations have achieved their intended outcomes such as increased ridership, improved safety, or reduced congestion. Much of the planning appears to rely on older studies or assumptions that may no longer reflect current conditions.

As residents, we are not opposed to bike infrastructure. However, we believe that decisions of this scale should be guided by current, transparent, and measurable data, along with ongoing evaluation.

Until such data is collected, validated, and shared publicly, we respectfully request a pause on the implementation of additional bike lane projects.

Through this petition, we ask the City of Fremont to:

  • Conduct and publish recent, comprehensive data on bike lane usage and traffic impact.
  • Install real-time or periodic cyclist counters at key corridors and intersections.
  • Evaluate the effect on vehicle congestion, emergency response times, and safety.
  • Reassess existing implementations where data does not support intended outcomes.
  • Resume or expand projects only after evidence-based review and community transparency.

This is not about being for or against bike lanes it is about ensuring that public infrastructure decisions are balanced, data-driven, and accountable to the community.
