The Issue

To the Executives and Decision-Makers of the K-Pop Industry,

K-pop is no longer just a genre—it is a global phenomenon, a bridge connecting cultures, languages, and people from all walks of life. As international fans, we have embraced this industry with open hearts, streaming music, attending concerts, supporting idols, and contributing to the global success of K-pop. We celebrate the way it blends different musical influences and styles, creating something truly unique.

However, as K-pop continues to expand its reach, it must also evolve in its understanding of the cultures it borrows from. Too often, elements of Black, Caribbean, South Asian, Indigenous, and many other cultures are incorporated without acknowledgment, leading to misrepresentation, misunderstanding, and even offense. While we believe these influences are often used out of admiration, admiration without education can lead to harm.

In no way do we believe that the entire K-pop industry is racist or ignorant. We know that many artists and creators deeply respect the cultures that influence their work. There are many fans who understand that there has never been any ill intent behind the efforts to create this incredible art form. However, even those of us who understand the admiration behind cultural influences are also recognizing that there are systemic issues that need to be addressed. Thousands of fans worldwide are often triggered by these instances and have consistently voiced their concerns, asking for some form of recognition and meaningful change within the system.

As dedicated fans, we are calling for the establishment of Cultural Sensitivity Departments within K-pop companies—specialized teams that can guide artists, producers, stylists, and creative directors in ensuring that cultural elements are used respectfully and accurately. These departments could:

 • Provide education and training for artists and staff on cultural elements before they are incorporated into concepts, styling, music, or performances.

 • Consult with cultural experts to ensure that representations are appropriate and respectful.

 • Engage with international fans to understand concerns and perspectives on cultural appropriation and representation.

 • Encourage authentic collaborations with artists and creators from the cultures being represented, rather than using cultural elements as mere aesthetics.

We are not asking for cultural separation—we love that K-pop is influenced by global sounds and styles. We are simply asking for effort, awareness, and respect. The same way K-pop companies invest in vocal coaches, choreographers, and stylists to perfect their artistry, they can invest in cultural education to ensure that their work uplifts rather than alienates.

K-pop has always been about innovation, about breaking boundaries and evolving with the times. Now, it’s time for the industry to take the next step—to not only be inspired by different cultures but to honor them properly.

We, the undersigned, love K-pop. We want to continue to love it wholeheartedly, without hesitation. And we believe that with care, intention, and education, K-pop can truly be a space where all cultures feel valued and respected.

Please, listen to us. Respect us. Work with us.

Sincerely
