Each year, from mid-May to mid-June, residents of Parishville, NY face an overwhelming surge of black flies that makes spending time outdoors unbearable. This annual infestation disrupts daily life and poses real health concerns for many in our community.

For those with allergic reactions, black fly bites cause severe swelling, intense irritation, and, in some cases, the need for Epipens and urgent medical care. Immunocompromised residents face even greater complications affecting organ function. Children, seniors, and pets are also heavily affected, leaving few in our community untouched by the problem.

Given these impacts on both health and quality of life, we are seeking a sustainable, community-wide solution beginning in Spring 2027.

We propose that the Town of Parishville commit to an annual black fly management program. 

Effective black fly control programs, like those implemented in Colton and parts of the Adirondack Park, utilize eco-friendly methods that target larvae breeding grounds in early spring, preventing adult infestations. It's a control, not elimination approach, and the program utilize biological larvicides, which are safe for humans and pets. 

We urge local officials to allocate funding in next year’s budget to support this initiative and prioritize the well-being of our community.  Our warm-weather season is already short—let’s make it more safe and enjoyable for all.
