PETITION FOR ACCOUNTABILITY AND SAFE TREATMENT IN SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA

PETITION FOR ACCOUNTABILITY AND SAFE TREATMENT IN SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA

The Issue

We, the undersigned (current and/or former) citizens and residents of Southwest Virginia, are asking for an independent investigation into repeated complaints involving:

- abuse of authority,

- retaliation,

- unsafe jail conditions,

- ignored sexual misconduct complaints,

- probation abuse,

- and civil rights violations connected to local law enforcement, probation officers, courts, and the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority, including the Duffield jail.

Too many people are afraid to speak up because they fear retaliation, harsher treatment, new charges, probation problems, humiliation, or being targeted after filing complaints or grievances.

Many former inmates, probationers, and families believe there is a serious lack of accountability and transparency in these systems.

We are especially concerned about:

- retaliation after PREA or grievance complaints,

- treatment of disabled, homeless, addicted, or mentally vulnerable people,

- abuse of power by officials,

- unsafe or degrading jail conditions,

- and the fear many citizens feel when dealing with local courts, probation officers, or jail staff.

We are calling for:

- an outside investigation,

- protection for people reporting abuse,

- review of grievance and PREA complaint handling,

- more transparency and accountability,

- and safe treatment for all people regardless of their charges, background, disability, or financial situation.

No one should be afraid to report abuse or ask for help.

The people of Southwest Virginia deserve fairness, safety, accountability, and a justice system that respects basic human rights.
