PETITION AGAINST THE NORTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY’S ATTEMPT TO WHITEWASH HISTORY
The Issue
Berger; Lee; Overcash (Primary)
Galey; Jones; Moffitt; Settle Senate Bill:
Senate Bill DRS45117-BE-3A and Protect Historical Truth
We, the undersigned, strongly oppose Senate Bill DRS45117-BE-3A, specifically Section 115C-76.205.3h, which falsely claims that the United States was not created by members of a particular race or sex for the purpose of oppressing members of another race or sex. This blatant misrepresentation of history is an attempt to distort the truth about our nation’s founding and its legal history, misleading students and whitewashing the injustices that were enshrined in law for generations.
Historical Truth Matters
The history of the United States includes well-documented legal barriers to citizenship and civil rights based on race. Some examples include:
The Naturalization Act of 1790, which restricted U.S. citizenship to “any alien, being a free white person.” This explicitly excluded Native Americans, Africans, and Asians from naturalization.
The Naturalization Act of 1870, which extended naturalization only to “aliens of African nativity” and “persons of African descent”—explicitly keeping Asian immigrants ineligible for citizenship.
The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which barred Chinese immigrants from naturalization entirely.
Supreme Court rulings that confirmed only white persons and later persons of African descent could become U.S. citizens, further demonstrating that the legal system reinforced racial hierarchy.
This history is well-documented by the U.S. government and legal scholars. Yet, Senate Bill DRS45117-BE-3A attempts to erase this reality and replace it with politically motivated revisionism.
We Demand Transparency and Accountability
We call on the North Carolina General Assembly to:
Immediately remove Senate Bill DRS45117-BE-3A.
Commit to teaching U.S. history accurately, including its ideals and failures.
Stop using legislation to spread falsehoods that mislead students and undermine education.
