Petition to the Administration of Crockett Midtown High School

We, the undersigned students, parents, alumni, and community members, respectfully request that Crockett Midtown High School reconsider its decision to require all students to wear medical scrubs as a mandatory daily uniform.

We recognize and appreciate the school's commitment to preparing students for careers in healthcare. However, requiring scrubs every day creates unnecessary challenges and does not accurately reflect the expectations of the healthcare profession.

Reasons for Our Concern
1. It Removes Students' Individuality
School is a place where students develop confidence, identity, and self-expression. While reasonable dress codes help maintain professionalism, requiring every student to wear identical scrubs significantly limits students' ability to express themselves through their clothing while still dressing appropriately.

2. It Does Not Reflect Real Healthcare Practices
In actual hospitals and healthcare facilities, scrubs are considered professional work attire. Healthcare workers generally change into clean scrubs before beginning their shift and are encouraged—or in many settings required—to avoid wearing clinical scrubs outside of patient-care areas to help reduce contamination risks and maintain infection-control standards. Wearing scrubs throughout the school day and in public does not accurately mirror these professional practices.

3. Scrubs Are Not Designed for Everyday Wear
Medical scrubs are lightweight garments intended for clinical work. During cold weather, they provide very little insulation, making students uncomfortable while traveling to and from school or moving between buildings. Students should not have to sacrifice comfort or warmth simply to comply with a uniform policy.

4. Additional Financial Burden
Families may have to purchase multiple sets of scrubs, replace worn items, and buy additional outerwear to stay warm. This creates an unnecessary financial burden, particularly for households with multiple children.

5. There Are Better Ways to Promote Professionalism
Professionalism can be taught through classroom instruction, clinical experiences, appropriate dress codes, and designated uniform days for healthcare courses. Students can learn responsibility and workplace expectations without being required to wear scrubs every school day.

Our Request
We respectfully ask Crockett Midtown High School to reconsider this mandatory policy and work with students, parents, and staff to develop a uniform policy that balances professionalism with comfort, practicality, affordability, and students' individuality.

We believe students can be prepared for successful healthcare careers without requiring daily scrub uniforms.
