The Issue

We do not support any elementary school consolidation/closure as a solution in the Master Plan and implore the Board of Education to present alternative solutions to keep facilities in good repair and meet the needs of fluctuating enrollment numbers.

All current school consolidation plans require costly bonds for expansions that may or may not pass.  Many of these proposed classroom additions resulting from consolidation are almost as expensive as fully fixing our current facilities!  This raises serious questions about whether consolidation is the most fiscally responsible approach.

In 2024 a bond was proposed to completely rebuild Breckenridge Elementary, now it is one of the schools considered for closure/consolidation.  This sudden shift towards recommendations for consolidation are rushed and lack creativity in exploring and presenting other options.

The inflated price tags ($24.7M for Breck El and $3.3M for Frisco) are being used to push the community toward consolidation.  According to an informed source, neither of these buildings have imminent needs and can continue to operate as is, but if we were to fix everything on the wish list this is what one estimate projects the costs to be.  We would ask the school district for another more reasonable assessment of our buildings detailing repairs and their priority levels.

When asked about the $700K in savings from school closure, the district responded, "The estimated savings from consolidation are relatively small.  If this were only about cost, it wouldn't justify a change like this. The bigger issue is how we best support students and staff over time."

Defer non-essential fixes, additions, and improvements in the short-term and focus on a responsible phased approach to making essential repairs to keep ALL schools open.
