Petion the Warms Spring Tribe to open Government Cove for fundraising and public outreach!

The Issue

Government Cove has become a sanctuary for my personal healing and self-discovery. Yet, its potential to serve as a powerful educational and cultural site for everyone has not been fully realized. Situated in the heart of Cascade Locks, OR, this significant piece of land has the power to unite communities through cultural understanding and respect. The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs and regional leaders have an opportunity to make this a reality by returning the stewardship of Government Cove to its rightful caretakers – the Indigenous people.

Recently the Tribe closed the island off from the public and only uses it for Weddings and car commercials but Government Cove could thrive as a well-maintained, and respected cultural and educational site.

The vision for Government Cove is inspiring. Imagine a place where the public can learn and engage with Indigenous history, culture, and contemporary issues. It could be periodically closed off for ceremonies and Indigenous retreats, providing a sacred space for reflection and traditional practices. Hiring local Indigenous people to oversee the collection of parking and camping fees could not only provide employment opportunities but also instill a sense of pride and ownership among the community.

Returning Government Cove to Indigenous stewardship would allow for its restoration and preservation in alignment with traditional ecological knowledge. This approach not only honors the long-standing relationship the Indigenous peoples have with the land but also enhances environmental sustainability through time-tested practices of care and management.

We urge the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs and regional leaders to embrace this vision. By entrusting the land back to Indigenous stewardship, we can foster an environment of learning, healing, and cultural exchange, enriching not only the tribes but all who visit this unique and cherished site.

Your support can turn this vision into reality. Sign the petition to return Government Cove to Indigenous stewardship, ensuring its future as a beacon of cultural education and environmental sustainability.
