Megan Fleming started this petition to Peter Gibson Darlington MP and

I would like to give some background to this petition, I am a 28 year old student at Teesside University studying Social Work.  My course requires me to do a full time placement which is 9-5 Monday to Friday, my husband also works full time as a Pipe-Fitter. We have an 18 month old daughter and therefore require childcare services.

As many are aware childcare can be very costly, for us to have our daughter in full time childcare this would average at a cost £900 per month. When looking at our options for Government support such as tax free childcare it became apparent that due to my ‘Student’ Status and household income that I would not receive support through these means (working tax credits).

I was instructed that in lieu of any Government Support Scheme’s there is a student childcare grant available via Student Finance England. However, this is means tested against household income, meaning anyone who earns over a certain amount is not entitled to this support either.

While I can accept that if we fall above the earning limit and we are not entitled to any support or tax benefit towards childcare cost, however, a household of two employed people, with a joint income of up to £100,000.00 would receive tax relief on their childcare costs reducing the cost from £900 down to £720 per month and in comparison a low income family would be entitled to other means of support.

It appears to me that when looking at my family’s circumstance we fall into what I feel is a blind spot, working families who are trying to further themselves and returning to education. As it lies we are not considered a low income family to be entitled to help yet we are also are not considered a high income and able to afford this cost.  Why is there this gap? It is frustrating and saddening that myself and many others in my situation would be left financially unable to pursue education further.

It is my hope to raise this issue and get the attention of my local MP in order to address this and hopefully help people in a similar situation to myself continue with their education and not be restricted by childcare cost. I am not in any way asking for free childcare but to be treated fairly and be entitled to the same support I would get had I been working.

It seems to be that there is support available for all walks life but this group of people in the ‘blind spot’ are left without any. I ask that people sign this petition to get the current childcare options reviewed.

Thank you for reading
