Let's Make America Handicap Accessible
The Issue
To whom it may concern ,
My name is Harold Sullivan, II I am a business owner, writer, producer and someone who people depend on. I like to travel and I loathe being late for anything. I’m 25 and I love to go out and have fun with friends. Also, I’m handicapped which is why I am writing to you.
I was born with a mild case of Cerebral Palsy, which means I am unable to drive myself. I’ve gotten used to it, but that’s a sad reality. Right now I own a handicap van and pay a $900 car note, on a car I can’t even drive myself. Thankfully, I have friends and family to chauffeur me. The only thing is I’m moving to Atlanta Georgia and I won’t have the same luxuries.
Some cities in America are easier to get around with than others. Here in Detroit, we have Detroit Metro Lyft, this is one of only a few companies accessible to me. They don’t have the resources to help everyone with disabilities get to where they need to go. Also, this is not a 24/7 service.
I’m grateful that I’ve found a company in Atlanta who drives me when I am in town. The only thing is this particular company only has a few drivers. This has to change.
It is unfair to me and every American like myself with a disability. There are so many of us at a disadvantage all because of the lack of handicap vehicles with lifts, safety straps and other needed necessities. We deserve that 24/7 Lyft or Uber option. Every major U.S. city should have a fleet of 20-50 cars that are accessible to all. This will create jobs and give the disabled civil rights America promises. I have ideas that I think we can all work together on. Let’s make America accessible for everyone!
Sincerely,
Harold Sullivan, II
