Federal Funding for Utica Avenue Subway Extension in Brooklyn

The Issue

This petition was created to show public support for the extension of the 4 train down Utica Avenue through a public infrastructure project. This would allow fast access from the existing 4 train line to Eastern Parkway AND all the way down to the Kings Plaza Shopping Center. The Utica Avenue Subway extension has been proposed in one form or another since the early 1920s. However, due to years of neglect in favor of other projects, the corridor and surrounding area has become a key example of the transportation inequities present in Black neighborhoods nationwide.

The Brooklyn Subway Desert is a term which refers to the majority-Black sections of outer Brooklyn which, though within NYC jurisdiction, do not equally benefit from the NYC subway system. The 100-year long delay on political will for this project shows us how Black neighborhoods, especially in the outer boroughs, almost never receive priority for major infrastructure improvements

We cannot allow unequal funding to persist in transportation and infrastructure. 100 YEARS IS LONG ENOUGH. As we begin to emerge from the COVID-19 crisis, we must reimagine what our cities look like. The Biden Administration's American Rescue Plan, U.S. Department of Transportation, and Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) must begin to serve the needs of our Black neighborhoods to encourage internal economic growth and an improved standard of living.
