The Issue

In 2026, the Earth and Space Science Regents exam in New York State has been a cause of significant distress for both students and educators. As someone directly affected by this issue, I have witnessed firsthand the countless students who have struggled to pass this exam, leading to a wave of discouragement and anxiety among them. The frustration and disappointment have become commonplace as students ponder why their hard work and dedication don't translate into passing grades.

One of the primary concerns surrounding the Earth and Space Science Regents is its apparent disconnect from the state curriculum. Teachers, who are tirelessly committed to delivering the prescribed syllabus, are unfairly burdened with the blame for the disproportionate number of failing grades. The reality, however, is that the exam's content does not accurately reflect the curriculum being taught, leading to a misalignment that leaves both students and teachers at a sizeable disadvantage.

Statistics indicate a troubling trend: a significant percentage of students are failing the Earth and Space Science Regents each year. According to recent reports, a large portion of students who sat for the 2025 exam recorded below-average scores, as the test included topics and questions that were either poorly represented or entirely absent from the year’s curriculum. This disconnect not only impacts student performance but also skews assessment metrics, unfairly affecting educational evaluations and school performances.

It is imperative that New York State acknowledges this issue and takes actionable steps to rectify it. By exempting the Earth and Space Science Regents for 2026, the state can buy time to thoroughly review and revise the exam’s content. This exemption should be seen as an opportunity for educational bodies to better align the test with the current curriculum, ensuring that it fairly assesses students based on what they have been taught.

Exempting the exam also offers a much-needed relief for students and teachers, allowing the educational focus to remain on learning rather than on exam preparation that does not complement the taught syllabus. Teachers will be better able to engage students in understanding and appreciating Earth and Space Sciences without the impending pressure of an unfair assessment.

Please join me in urging the New York State Education Department to exempt the 2026 Earth and Space Science Regents exam. By doing so, we can collectively push for a fairer, more representative evaluation system for future students. Sign this petition to show your support and help us bring about this essential change.
