Permit the Use of Tobacco Products Indoors

The Issue

I am an ardent tobacco enthusiast and champion for individual rights. I have found that the smoking community is increasingly limited by restrictions that prevent us from enjoying, in a responsible manner, a product that is legal. This tension between personal rights and valid public health concerns has locked us in an ongoing debate. The limitation on where tobacco products can be consumed has consequences on our personal freedom, preventing us from pursuing our right to happiness in the manner and location we desire.

It cannot be overstated; tobacco use is legal. Critically, while we must all be conscious of the impact of smoking on others, particularly in indoor spaces, it should also be noted that a balanced and fair policy could be implemented to cater to the rights of both smokers and non-smokers. In Japan, for instance, segregation of smoking areas is a common practice, rather than an outright ban (World Health Organization, 2018).

Considering the increasing number of restrictions placed on the consumption of tobacco products - nearly 80% of U.S. states have some kind of smoking ban (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020) - it is time to propose a fair and balanced discourse.

Therefore, this petition seeks to promote understanding, conversation, and ultimately policy change toward more inclusive regulations that consider the needs and freedoms of tobacco consumers. Thus, we implore lawmakers to revisit and revise the laws governing the use of tobacco products indoors. Express your support by signing this petition. Every signature brings us one step closer to change.
