Permit Police Chief Franklin to Share Town Updates on the Streator Police Facebook Page

The Issue

Like countless other members of our community, I rely on being informed about what goes on in Streator for peace of mind and a feeling of connection to the town I call home. For me, receiving these updates from a reliable and trusted source such as our local law enforcement’s Facebook page is not just ideal, it's vital. Currently, Police Chief Franklin is not permitted to share town updates on the Streator Police Department's Facebook page - a service many of us believe would significantly benefit our town’s sense of community.

Based on the data, a study by Pew Research Center in 2019 indicated that 70% of U.S adults feel their local law enforcement should have a role in providing community news. They argue that this connection with the community can increase trust and cooperation between the force and the citizens it serves. The same research shows that 71% of U.S adults get news from local TV and digital sources, indicating the power and importance of local, digital news updates (Pew Research Center, Local News Study, 2019).

By allowing Police Chief Franklin to post regular updates on the Streator Police Facebook page, we can ensure a well-informed community that is up-to-date on local happenings and emergency situations. This small, but significant change can increase transparency, community involvement, and mutual trust.

I am not alone in my desire for accountable and accessible communication from our local law enforcement. I ask you to stand with me and our neighbors in allowing Police Chief Franklin the ability to keep us informed through the Streator Police Facebook page. Please sign this petition and help our community stay connected and informed.
