Nevertheless, the students of Addis Ababa University (AAU) are presently facing a restriction that hampers their self-expression—one that limits the length of their hair. In educational institutions, individuality and diversity should be celebrated, and that includes the freedom to choose one's hairstyle.

The enforcement of hair length restrictions at AAU curtails personal freedom and imposes uniformity in an environment that should foster creativity and self-expression. Many students feel marginalized and discriminated against because such regulations disproportionately affect individuals with naturally curly or kinky hair types, which are intrinsic to many Ethiopian people.
