As a dog owner living in the city, I have witnessed firsthand the negative impact of confining dogs to urban environments. Dogs require access to nature for their mental and physical well-being. However, current public transportation policies restrict our furry friends from accompanying us on trains and buses, limiting their exposure to natural environments and potentially leading to behavioral issues.

In addition, these restrictions also affect us as pet owners. Exploring nature with our pets not only benefits them but also contributes positively to our own well-being. Therefore, it is crucial that we revise these policies for the benefit of both dogs and their owners.

The proposed solution is simple yet effective - allow dogs on public transportation under certain conditions. These include wearing a muzzle for safety purposes and paying a cargo fare which can contribute towards maintaining cleanliness in public transport vehicles. Furthermore, designating specific areas within trains or buses for pets would ensure minimal disturbance to other passengers.

According to Statista, 209 thousand households Hong Kong households own at least one pet which translates into thousands of people who could potentially benefit from this change (Statista Research 2023).
