The Issue

What happened in Gig Harbor, Washington is horrifying, and it must never be allowed to happen again. A woman trusted her medical provider. Instead, he secretly drugged her with abortion-inducing medication without her knowledge. The provider, David Benjamin Coots, was not only her nurse practitioner—he was also her romantic partner and in a position of authority at MultiCare Medical Park.

According to court records, Coots slipped the abortion pill Mifepristone into a coffee drink and later inserted additional pills without her consent. She suffered severe physical pain, emotional trauma, and likely the loss of a pregnancy she had already begun to prepare for. He has since pleaded guilty to assault and witness tampering, served a short sentence, and had his license suspended.

That is not enough.

The Washington State Nursing Commission must act now to permanently revoke David Coots’ license and ensure that he is never allowed to practice medicine again—in Washington or any other state.

This wasn’t a minor boundary violation or a misjudgment. It was a deliberate, invasive, and deeply personal assault committed under the guise of medical care. It shattered a woman’s trust, endangered her health, and may have ended a pregnancy she had not chosen to terminate.

This petition is about justice—not just for one woman, but for every patient who deserves to feel safe in an exam room. Coots used his medical position to manipulate, harm, and silence someone in his care. No professional who commits such acts should ever be allowed to serve patients again.

We call on the Washington State Nursing Commission to move swiftly and decisively. Revoke Coots’ nursing license permanently. Enforce accountability. And send a clear message: there is no room in medicine for this kind of abuse.

Stand up for victims. Protect patient trust. Demand justice now.
