After a long battle with developers the Antelope has finally been put up for lease.

News that is punctuated by the Marsh Lane development opposite going in to a consultation phase with a further 220 homes added to the huge Coronation, Gas Works and Estate way developments that surround the pub and will bring added footfall to an already busy location.

Contact with specialist estate agent Davis Coffer leads us to believe that formal paperwork is forthcoming on the exact offering and that viewing of the premises will start as soon as this week.

A landmark former pub in Leyton, which was illegally turned into flats, is now searching for someone to reopen it.

The Antelope in Church Road is available to lease for "around £50,000", a spokesperson from specialist estate agent Davis Coffer Lyons told the Echo today.

The historic pub closed after almost 140 years in 2014 and, to the dismay of the neighbourhood, was then converted it into 14 studio flats and a shop.

Waltham Forest Council ordered owner Tvzi Ltd to reverse the changes, done without planning permission, but the company appealed the decision to the Planning Inspectorate.

However, planning inspector Richard Perrins sided with the council and ordered Tvzi to turn it back into a pub, arguing it had not tried hard enough to find someone to run it.

In his written decision in January, planning inspector Mr Perrins rejected Tvzi’s claim that it had “campaigned” to save the pub before finally admitting defeat.

He wrote: “On the evidence, that ‘campaign’ amounted to one tweet from a Twitter account with some 12 followers, with no subsequent responses; it carries no weight.

“Local people… have an undisputed desire to investigate the possibilities of a community pub and do not want the community asset to be lost.”
