Keep The McDonough Square Statue

The Issue

On July 7th, word spread fast that McDonough's Confederate Soldier statue will be soon taken down because of it's so-called "intimidating and racial connotations," and will be brought down within the next 60-days if actions are not taken. One of the commissioners who approved of this, Dee Clemmons, was also the person behind the closing of the Nash Farms Battlefield Museum. Citizens of Henry County, why are we voting in people who hate what we believe in? Why are they in office if all they want to do is change our traditions?

This move goes in direct opposition to the Bill (SB 77) our Governor, Brian Kemp, recently passed in 2019 that is "to provide additional protections for government statues, monuments, plaques, banners, and other commemorative symbols; to provide definitions; to provide for related matters; to provide an effective date; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes." https://bit.ly/31WgCR0

McDonough was part of Sherman's March to the Sea, and was savagely looted by Union soldiers (https://bit.ly/2ZKrEpz). The Confederate Soldier statue is there to represent the many who died from trying to protect our city from looters (oh how history likes to repeat itself!) Taking away the soldier would be taking away McDonough's history of the war we had to face.

Sign this petition to STOP the erasure of McDonough's local history and the Confederate Soldier from being taken away from our Beautiful Square.
