Stop Declawing of Cats in the US

The Issue

"The rest of the world recognizes it as mutilation" says Jennifer Conrad, a veterinarian who founded The Paw Project, a group against the declawing of cats. It is a painful process and correctly referred to as mutilation in other countries. Almost every country in Europe has made it illegal. It is painful, and the equivalent of cutting off the top knuckle of your hands. To declaw a cat, you amputate each toe at the first knuckle, taking off bone along with tendons and the claw. Some veterinarians say it can lead to lifelong complications, pain, and lameness.
55% of cat owners approve of this operation. You are not stopping your cat's natural instincts, just causing it pain and to use other options, like biting. The country needs to stop this!

I'd like to quote another petition on this that is trying to ban declawing in the state of Colorado:

"Not only is this inhumane, but it is very harmful to the health of your cat. Essentially, you are cutting the top knuckle off of your cats paw. People often mistakenly believe that declawing your cat will stop them from scratching, but in reality all you're doing is making it less likely that your cat will use the litter box and more likely to start biting instead of scratching. The method of removing the claw is quite horrifying. To do this, they amputate with a scalpel or with guillotine clippers, then the wounds are closed with stitches or surgical glue, and then the feet are bandaged. There are many drawbacks to declawing your cat as well, such as: pain in the paw, infection, tissue necrosis (tissue death), lameness, and back pain. When you remove your cats claws it changes the way their feet touch the ground, feeling like the equivalent of wearing an uncomfortable set of shoes." About 25% of cats are declawed.

Why would you do this to your cat if you cared about it at all? It is legal in almost all of the US. Again, an article on the subject: https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/govbeat/wp/2015/05/14/is-declawing-cruel-to-cats-new-york-might-be-the-first-state-to-ban-it/

We need to end this horrifying procedure and let cats be cats.
