Safer streets for Leonay!

The issue

We love our beautiful Leonay for the quaint little town it is and we want to keep its serenity so we can all enjoy this amazing lifestyle. We are nestled between the beautiful Nepean River and the stunning Blue Mountains – this enables us to enjoy the open spaces doing the things we all love with our families like exercising, walking our dogs and letting our kids play in a safe environment. However, over the past few years this has not been the case. We have for many years now raised concerns around the continuing issue of speeding and reckless driving in our community, endangering the lives of our residents.

Our worst nightmare was very sadly realised on the afternoon of Tuesday 28 April, 2020 when a woman was fatally struck by a car at the southern end of River Road. This tragic event has sent a harrowing ripple of both sadness and anger throughout our community.

In more recent times we have seen a noticeable increase in the use our roads for exercise and recreation, particularly River Road. Families riding bikes, children on scooters, parents and grandparents pushing babies in prams, people jogging, people walking, everyone should have the right to feel safe when they are outside enjoying the fresh air in their own community.

Now is the time for action to make our streets safer!

We, the residents of Leonay, call on the council/local government to implement traffic calming measures throughout our community to help make our streets safer for pedestrians, cyclists, our children, and all of the road users alike.

You can HAVE YOUR SAY on what you think should be done by completing the online form at: www.yoursay.net

We MUST take action immediately to protect our safety and keep enjoying the lifestyle that Leonay affords us for generations to come. Please join us in lobbying the Penrith Council for immediate action.
