Dear Mr. Levesque:
As members of the Maine House of Representatives serving communities that border New Hampshire, we are writing to express our and our constituents’ concerns regarding the Pease Air Cargo Project.
Though we are separated by the Piscataqua River and the Maine-New Hampshire border, our communities are deeply interconnected. The Maine border communities we represent will be directly impacted by the proposed Pease Air Cargo Project. Our constituents are expressing grave concern that this project will have problematic effects on our quality of life, property values and even public health here in Maine’s southernmost communities.
As you know, the proposed air cargo operations would generate a great deal of noise pollution. This is a concern around the clock and particularly during nighttime hours. The level of noise pollution expected would be more than just a nuisance for nearby residents and communities. We know that intrusive noise levels have very real and significant health implications, including heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and sleep disturbance.
We have also heard from property owners and real estate professionals alike who are concerned that the project will negatively impact property values. For those who have chosen to invest their hard-earned dollars in property here and whose life savings are tied up in their homes, the effects could be truly devastating.
Finally, we know that many residents of our area chose to come to or stay in these communities because the quality of life we enjoy here. It is central to the character of our communities and what makes the region such a special place to live, work, recreate, raise a family and age with dignity. As we weigh competing needs and priorities, the importance of quality of life must not be undervalued.
We ask you to please carefully consider and adequately address these concerns during the planning process. If we can help to facilitate that in any way, please feel welcome to contact us.
Sincerely,
Michele Meyer State Representative
