Pause the sale and use of Meta Smart Glasses until strong privacy rules are established

The Issue

In recent months, serious privacy concerns have emerged around Meta’s smart glasses, which contain built-in cameras, microphones, and AI features capable of recording people and environments in real time. Investigations and news reports in 2026 revealed that some photos and videos captured by these glasses may have been reviewed by human contractors as part of AI training processes, raising questions about how personal footage is collected, stored, and accessed. In some reported cases, reviewers allegedly saw highly sensitive material, including private or intimate moments recorded without the awareness of those nearby.

These devices are designed to look like ordinary eyewear, making it extremely difficult for people nearby to know when they are being recorded. Privacy experts warn that wearable cameras combined with AI assistants could enable covert recording of bystanders without consent in everyday spaces such as restaurants, schools, workplaces, and homes.   While Meta states that media generally stays on the device unless shared, ongoing lawsuits and regulatory scrutiny show that current safeguards may not be sufficient to protect the public.

Until clear rules exist about when and where these devices can record, how consent should be obtained, and how captured data can be used or stored, the widespread deployment of AI recording glasses poses unacceptable risks to personal privacy. We call on lawmakers and regulators to temporarily halt the sale and public use of Meta smart glasses until comprehensive privacy protections, transparency requirements, and enforcement mechanisms are in place to protect individuals from surveillance without consent.

Call to Action

We ask regulators and lawmakers to:
1. Pause the sale and widespread deployment of Meta smart glasses until clear privacy rules are established.
2. Require visible recording indicators and consent mechanisms for anyone who may be captured on camera or audio.
3. Create strict rules for data storage, AI training, and third-party review of recorded footage.
4. Establish protections for sensitive spaces such as schools, bathrooms, healthcare settings, and private homes.
