The Issue

On behalf of the local residents of St Lawrence Ramsgate, we are raising our voices regarding the homeless residents temporarily residing in the parish hall. This arrangement was made between the Church and a charity, yet we, the local community, were neither informed nor consulted on this decision or its duration. As direct witnesses to the consequences of this agreement, we are now compelled to express our concerns.

The situation has led to a significant increase in anti-social behaviour within our neighbourhood. We are witnessing alarming activities such as public alcohol consumption, drug use, shouting in the early hours, urination on private properties, and instances of individuals sitting in residents' doorways partaking in illicit substances. This has understandably led to heightened police presence and a growing sense of unease among families and individuals residing here.

We acknowledge the necessity of providing shelter and support to those in need, but it must be conducted with a transparent dialogue that includes all stakeholders. The lack of communication has not only disrupted the safety and peace of our community but has also engendered a feeling of exclusion and disregard for the residents who have long called this place home.

We are asking the Diocese of Canterbury to pause any further placements into the parish hall until a thorough and inclusive consultation process is conducted with local residents. It's crucial to find a balanced solution that respects both the needs of the homeless and the rights of the community.

We believe that through collaborative engagement, we can reach a sustainable resolution that provides safe shelter while maintaining the integrity and harmony of our cherished community. Please sign this petition to urge the Diocese to initiate this vital dialogue and restore peace to St Lawrence Ramsgate.
