Pause new AI data centre approvals
The Issue
Petition to Vaughan City Council: Pause New AI Data Centre Approvals Until Comprehensive Review and Public Consultation
The residents of Vaughan are calling on City Council to temporarily pause approvals for new hyperscale AI data centres until a comprehensive assessment of their potential impacts has been completed and meaningful public consultation has taken place.
Hyperscale AI data centres are large-scale facilities that provide the computing power required for artificial intelligence and cloud technologies. These facilities can require significant electricity, cooling infrastructure, and land, making their planning an important issue for municipalities and residents alike.
Many members of our community are concerned that decisions regarding these developments are moving forward without sufficient public awareness or meaningful engagement. Given the long-term implications for infrastructure, land use, energy demand, environmental sustainability, and community planning, residents deserve the opportunity to understand these projects and participate in the decision-making process.
Important questions remain unanswered:
-What impact will these facilities have on -Vaughan’s electrical infrastructure and future energy demand?
-How will noise, backup generators, heat emissions, traffic, and other environmental impacts be managed?
-What are the anticipated economic benefits for Vaughan residents?
-What safeguards will be implemented to ensure these developments are compatible with surrounding communities?
We are not asking Vaughan to reject innovation. We are asking the City to ensure that decisions of this scale are made transparently, based on evidence, and with meaningful public input.
We respectfully call on Vaughan City Council to:
-Temporarily pause approvals for new hyperscale AI data centres.
-Conduct an independent review of their infrastructure, environmental, and community impacts.
-Engage residents through a transparent public consultation process.
-Develop a municipal planning framework that establishes clear standards before additional projects are approved.
Development should reflect the long-term interests of Vaughan residents. By signing this petition, you are supporting transparency, informed decision-making, and meaningful community participation in shaping the future of our city.
