Pause Massive AI Data Centre Approvals Until Australia Has Proper Safeguards
The issue
Australia is witnessing a rapid push to develop large-scale AI data centres to support the growing demands of artificial intelligence technologies. While innovation has an important role to play in our future, developments of this scale must not proceed without full transparency regarding their environmental, energy and community impacts.
Our Call to Government
We call on the Australian Government and State Governments to:
Pause approvals for new large-scale AI data centres until comprehensive national standards are established.
Require public disclosure of projected electricity and water consumption for every proposed facility.
Mandate independent environmental impact assessments.
Ensure genuine community consultation before planning approvals are granted.
Protect environmentally sensitive and agricultural land from inappropriate development.
Require annual public reporting on energy use, water consumption and emissions.
Conduct a national inquiry into the cumulative impacts of AI infrastructure across Australia.
Artificial intelligence may shape the future, but Australians should not be asked to bear the environmental and infrastructure costs without transparency, accountability and proper planning.
We support responsible innovation. We do not support the unchecked expansion of massive AI data centres without adequate safeguards.
Sign this petition if you believe Australians deserve a voice before these developments proceed.
AI data centres can consume vast amounts of electricity and water, place pressure on existing infrastructure, and create significant long-term environmental consequences. Australians have a right to understand these impacts before major projects are approved.
