Pause All Non-Essential Dog Breeding Until All Rescue Dogs Have Homes

The Issue

Every year, thousands of beautiful, loyal, and loving dogs wait in shelters, often for months, sometimes for life. Many are never chosen. They wait for warmth, safety, and the human connection they were born to give. And still, dog breeding continues, bringing more puppies into a world already overflowing with unwanted and abandoned companions.

We are calling for a pause on all non-essential dog breeding until every rescue dog has the chance to be rehomed. This does not mean halting the vital work of specially trained service dogs, such as guide dogs for the visual and hearing impaired, medical alert dogs, or search and rescue dogs. However, we believe these organisations should be actively encouraged, and where possible, supported, to prioritise training suitable dogs from shelters.

Breeders continue to produce more dogs for profit. On popular online pet sale platforms, dogs are sold like products - often for hundreds or even thousands of pounds.

·        A 9-month-old German Shepherd: £2,600

·        Dachshund puppies: £1,100 each

·        Cocker Spaniel puppies: £1,350 each

While some dogs are “priced down” to £500 or less, they are still being treated as commodities - not as sentient lives deserving love and care.

Behind every litter, there is often a mother dog who has been bred repeatedly. When she can no longer produce puppies, she is often thrown away - abandoned, sold on, or left at a shelter, frightened and alone.

We are calling on a -

·        A national pause on dog breeding while rescue populations remain high

·        Regulation of online pet sales, and a ban on profit-driven mass breeding

·        Government support for adoption, fostering, and rescue awareness

This is not about blame - it is about compassion. It’s about choosing life already born and waiting.

We are not against dogs - we are for those already here.
Until they all have homes, I ask: please, no more non essential breeding.

This movement was inspired by Sid, a rescue dog who transformed the life of a profoundly deaf person, not through special breeding, but through intuition, empathy, and a natural gift for companionship. He is proof that the gifts we seek in dogs already live within many of those waiting quietly behind shelter doors.

A Message from the Heart

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to everyone who has signed and shared this petition. Your support and your willingness to stand up for the voiceless, means more than words can say. When we gather enough signatures, we will be able to present this petition to the government - together, we can be the change.

This cause is deeply personal to me.
I was born profoundly deaf, and the love I received from our rescue dog, Sid, was nothing short of a gift from heaven. Sid seemed to know, without being told, how to support me. His presence in my life was pure, intuitive companionship - a bond beyond words.

Recently, Sid came to me in a dream.
In that quiet, sacred space, he asked me to speak for the dogs still waiting on Death Row. Those abandoned, overlooked, and never given the chance to love or be loved.

So I wrote this message that follows as if it were written by Sid himself - because I believe, in some way, it was.

Please read it with your heart.
And thank you for helping to give all dogs a future,
Until they all have homes.

Why We Dogs Matter

We dogs are important and should never be treated as disposable. We are not products. We are companions, guardians, healers and teachers.

Many of us are therapy dogs, comforting children in hospitals and supporting veterans with PTSD. We have a rare gift of bringing peace where there is pain.

There are also working dogs amongst us; guide dogs for the blind and hard of hearing humans. We can even detect seizures before they happen. We guard homes and herds, and serve on front lines in search-and-rescue teams. In a world full of judgement, we show you, by example, what loyalty, joy, and love is with no need for explanations. We live in the moment, and teach you how to slow down, be aware, notice what matters, and be grateful for the simple things in life; a walk, a touch, a moment of connection.

As death approaches, we show you how to embrace it fearlessly. I will tell you about my brother’s dying and death and my own, because we dogs know how to die with dignity.

When my brother, Percy, became ill, my mum said she somehow knew he was going to die from the looks he gave her. On this day, my mum felt an urge to tell Percy how much she loved him. Half an hour later, Percy walked to the front door. He wanted to go outside, but the door was closed. There is a statue of our god dog, Anubis, to the side of the door. He dropped to the floor in front of Anubis. His soul had passed over the rainbow bridge to the other side.

My mum told me about her experience of seeing me pass over the other side, too. My mum and dad knew I was dying, because the vet could not do anything more to save my life. I was lying down. My dad was behind me, stroking me tenderly. My mum was kneeling in front of me. Suddenly, I knew this was the moment I was to leave me body. I lifted up and looked my mum straight in the eyes. She said my eyes were so brilliant and beautiful, like two stars. Then, I drifted off, and my soul left to join my brother Percy, on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.

I was lucky - I died in the arms of those who loved me. Thousands of others die alone in shelters, never knowing they mattered.

Not only do we teach humans about life and living in the moment, we also teach them about dying and death, and that this is not the end.
IMHO, a world without us canine, would be a sad place indeed.

Thank you so much to those of you who have already signed. Please keep the petition alive by signing and sharing. Our goal cannot be reached without you!
