Pauls Promise: Make dysphagia awareness training mandatory in all care settings
The Issue
Our beloved brother and son, Paul, passed away in a tragic choking incident at his residential care home.
Dysphagia, a condition characterized by difficulties in swallowing, is alarmingly prevalent among vulnerable adults, particularly those in care homes, residential homes, and healthcare settings within the NHS. Statistics reveal that one in five elderly individuals experience swallowing difficulties, and yet, despite this significant incidence, training in dysphagia awareness remains non-mandatory. This oversight leaves countless adults at risk every day.
There is a dire need for nationwide reform to protect our vulnerable populations. We call upon the UK government, the NHS, and care home regulatory bodies to make dysphagia awareness and management training mandatory for all staff working with vulnerable adults. Such training should include comprehensive understanding of the signs of dysphagia, emergency response protocols in case of choking, and regular updates to care plans and risk assessments. It should also include Competency testing and over sight of these being in place by regulatory bodies.
Implementing mandatory training will help ensure that staff are equipped with the necessary knowledge to prevent choking incidents and provide safer care environments for everyone. This is a matter of life and death, as our family tragically knows all too well.
Please sign this petition to mandate dysphagia awareness training, and together, let's safeguard the health and lives of vulnerable individuals. Your support can drive meaningful change and prevent further tragedies like Paul's.Our beloved brother and son, Paul, passed away in a tragic and preventable choking incident at his residential care home.
