The construction of the light rail station at Burleigh Heads has commenced. Already we are hearing from council and government that the light rail may not run through Palm Beach to the airport, the very reason that was used to justify it coming to Burleigh Heads.

It is very likely that the light rail will end at Burleigh Heads and we will be saddled with a train that goes nowhere and dumps everyone out at Burleigh. We can now look forward to the disruption of business, and our lifestyles, the increase in crime associated with the light rail, and congestion as Burleigh Heads becomes a transport hub.

In the election tomorrow you can make your vote count if this local issue is the main one guiding your vote. The major parties offer little choice.

ALP - the government was obsessed with pushing the light rail to Burleigh Heads, its consultation process was a sham and local opinions were discarded.

LNP - the opposition had an opportunity to provide a point of difference, they didn't. The local member flopped from one position to the next and never assertively took on the proposed light rail. Even worse other LNP members on the coast and the LNP Shadow transport minister and Leader demanded that the light rail be built faster to connect to Burleigh Heads.

There are a number of alternative parties running in the Burleigh seat, but that will be your democratic choice to place your vote where you think it will count. Overall the options both in major party and minor appear to be pretty poor. So if you want to protest vote, you will need to decide who you want protest against more!!!
