Keep RHUL students safe - allow us access through the back gate

The Issue

The back gate is locked at night - preventing students who live in Egham from getting home via a direct route. Normally, the majority of students climb over the current fence, but now Royal Holloway university plans to build a 3 metres tall, impenetrable fence to prevent students from taking this route.

This new fence puts students in jeopardy; forcing vulnerable members of the student community to walk for a longer time after dark, where they risk being put in harms way.

We don't think it's fair to force students to put themselves in danger just so they can get home.

Noise will be generated by students walking home whichever way they walk home - this just means another part of Egham will be disturbed.

We propose a key-card system. Those who have a college key card can swipe it at the back gate, permitting them to come and go safely throughout the night without disturbing residents by noisily clambering over the fence. This way, campus remains safe from non-authorised personnel from entering, and allows students to get home via campus more safely.

If the key-card system is unsuitable, another method needs to be found where the back gate can be kept open for students.

We similarly think more Shh buses should be run to take students safely home.
