Dear Supporters,
I just want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support and for signing this petition. I have an update for you all. I received an email from the deputy managing editor. It was such a condescending email. I will post it here for you all to read. Its obvious that they are not taking this petition seriously. We need to get more signatures, this complaint needs to be taken to the Press Complaints Commission. Please read the email below.
Dear Ms Adetoro
Thank you for your email, which has been passed to me for attention.
I have noted the terms of your petition, and the comments you have made in your email below. You appear to have looked into the matter extensively ahead of contacting us directly.
We are sorry to hear that you were upset by the publication of the image. Please be assured that there was no intention of causing any offence with the publication of this story.
By way of background, the article reported on a media event for KidZania, to which numerous local schoolchildren were invited and at which numerous press photographers were present. We have been informed that all of those photographed signed the appropriate consent forms ahead of the images being taken and distributed by the various reputable photo agencies.
On the day of publication, we received a selection of photographs of children from all backgrounds enjoying the activities at the event, and we published a large number of these as they demonstrated the breadth of the event, and the scale of the city in question.
In regard to the photograph about which you are concerned, as the caption to the image made clear at the time of original publication – “just as in a real city, Kidzania has a realistic jail that comes with appropriately bleak décor” – the use of the photograph was simply to illustrate how detailed the city was: it even had a police station with a jail. This was the only image we received which showed the jail.
We made no comment on the child in the photograph, and there was no intention to cause any upset or offence by its use.
It’s also important to recognise that the story itself was a positive one about an opening of an exciting new project for children, and we did not intend to suggest anything negative through the use of the imagery.
Out of its specific context, we regret that anyone has read into the image something which was not intended in any way.
You should be aware that we were contacted by KidZania after publication, who requested the removal of the photograph as a gesture of goodwill, which we were happy to do. The photograph was removed on 30 June.
We have checked with KidZania and have been informed that no complaint has been received from the family of the child.
To confirm, we have received one other complaint about the use of the image, not “numerous complaints from various readers” as you outline below, and have responded similarly.
We are always glad to hear from readers with their feedback, and thank you for taking the time to contact us.
Best wishes
Scott Langham
