We, the undersigned, members of Plaza-Midwood and surrounding communities, urge the members of the Charlotte City Council to reject Rezoning Petition 2015-56. In addition to the rejection of this rezoning petition, we urge the members of the Committee to give grave consideration before approving similar petitions for more multi-family housing within our neighborhoods.

Charlotte communities have been inundated with multi-family housing at a rate which is unsustainable if the distinct characters of our neighborhoods are to be preserved. The cost of such unbridled residential development is not only the potential loss of small, local businesses like Tommy's Pub and Backstage Vintage Apparel, but the potential loss of the very residents who built the neighborhoods and make them unique. In addition to these losses, there may be serious consequences if more housing is built without fully exploring possible negative outcomes and developing solutions to these problems before they arise. We feel issues such as parking, traffic, safety, affordability, and the potential negative environmental impacts must be taken into more serious consideration by the Committee. We believe the long-term consequences of a potential housing glut have also not fully been weighed. We understand growth is necessary for the health of a city, but too much growth, too fast, and without wise, sustainable planning is detrimental to the quality of life of the citizens of Charlotte. We demand our representatives in the City Council act in accordance with what their constituents want for the future of their neighborhoods and city.
