Purpose: We are a group of concerned citizens in North Carolina, fighting for stricter regulations on the use of corporal punishment in our state’s private schools, especially when being used on children with special needs.  We believe that the rules governing private schools should be stricter, and that the NC laws need to be updated to differentiate between schools that implement corporal punishment, and school that use assault against children.  We as a community will not simply go away and allow another child to suffer at the hands of people like this.

Background: Brandon, a child with special needs, was beaten by Paul King Latham, assistant principal at Johnathan's House Christian School located at 609 Attain Court, Fuquay Varina. Per the Judge’s ruling, he found the facts of this case "concerning" as well as the punishment "excessive". Based on the most relevant cases that the judge had to reference (100 plus years ago), Paul King Latham was found NOT GUILTY. (State v. Alford 68 NC 322)

There are a mere 13 simple requirements that non public schools have to abide by in this state (http://www.ncdnpe.org/hhh104.aspx). With that said, there are AMAZING non public schools (private) all over this great state. But with so few requirements to abide by, it leaves the door wide open for that 1% who do not have the best interests of the students at heart to operate….people like Melanie Stewart (owner of Johnathan's House Christian School) and Paul King Latham (assistant principal and teacher at Johnathan’s House). 

Plea: Governor McCrory, we ask you to please protect the children of our state by imposing and enforcing stricter regulations on the use of corporal punishment in North Carolina’s private schools, especially when being used on children with special needs.  They are our future and they deserve better than this!
