Women’s rights in the United States are not as protected as you might have thought.

The “Women’s Bill of Rights”, CEDAW, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, is one of the core international human rights treaties which secures the basis of women’s equality by ensuring women’s equal opportunities in political and public life, including the right to vote, education, health, and employment.

There are only 6 countries in the world that have not ratified the UN treaty. The United States is one of them. The Convention was signed in 1980 by President Jimmy Carter, but it has never been ratified by the U.S. Senate.

Now is the time to take action! President Biden is committed to ratifying CEDAW. A national movement called “Cities for CEDAW” and other advocacy groups are urging political leaders to pass legislation at city, county, state, and national levels. 15 cities/counties have ordinances and 40 cities throughout the US have passed resolutions.  

Let’s further advance the efforts to provide equal opportunities for women and girls, encourage other municipalities to join our efforts to encourage equal rights, and ensure dignity and respect for women to end systemic forms of discrimination and abuse of women and girls in the United States.
