Pass the Sunjun L. July Act: Require Vests for All Security Guards
The Issue
On January 11, 2026, Sunjun L. July, a 22-year-old security guard, was brutally murdered while working overnight at the Wyndham Hotel in Downtown OKC. He was jumped by a group of teenagers, ranging in age from 12–16 years old, and shot multiple times while already on the ground.
Sunjun was CLEET certified, trained, and dedicated. He chose not to carry a gun because he believed in peace. He had worked for his company for two years without incident. He was reliable, kind, and respected.
What makes this tragedy even more heartbreaking is that Sunjun was not provided with a bulletproof vest. He was sent to protect others without being properly protected himself.
Sunjun was more than a security guard. He was a son, a baby brother, a best friend, and a young man with dreams beyond his job. He had plans for his future that were taken from him far too soon.
No family should ever have to bury their child because of preventable workplace failures.
We are calling for the creation of the “Sunjun L. July Act,” which would require all licensed security companies to provide and mandate the use of ballistic vests and proper safety equipment for all on-duty security guards.
This law would help prevent future tragedies and ensure that no other family experiences this kind of loss.
Sunjun deserved protection. So do all security guards.
