Three of Taylor Swift’s giant concerts in Vienna were abruptly cancelled because of terrorism threats that were traced back to and fueled by TikTok. The plan was for three members of ISIS to infiltrate security and kill “a huge number of people.”  

Fueled by false information propagated via social media, our society is becoming a breeding ground for extremist hate. The disinformation campaigns we are subjected to not only threaten our unity, health, safety, and morale, but also steadily foster an environment of polarization within our society. It should be no surprise then that much of the extremism fostered on social media is funded and deployed by foreign actors seeking to destroy the security and well-being of America. 

No foreign nation should ever have the right to spread lethal propaganda on our soil that is designed to destroy us. 

With these concerns in mind, I urge the American government to pass the Platform Accountability and Transparency Act. 

This Act is fully post-partisan, generated, researched, developed, and backed by key members of both parties. As such, it is a powerful opportunity to exhibit national unity and project strength in the world - in a way that all of us can contribute to and root for. 

PATA will serve as a critical tool to root out foreign disinformation and funding sources, increase transparency on social media platforms, and provide our society with the means to combat chaos and violence. It can also aid efforts to dilute the harmful aftereffects of these foreign PSYOPs, combat the detrimental social implications at home, and counter threats, whether they be planned acts of terror or increasing threats of violence to our citizens – regardless of race or religion. Unchecked and unregulated, this disinformation will continue to explode, bringing violence and terror with it. 

It's time to shift our stance from being reactive to proactive. And to put the well-being and safety of our communities back in the hands of Americans from all parties and leaders who represent all parts of our country. 

The Platform Accountability and Transparency Act is a key step toward that. Its enactment will pave the way toward a more transparent virtual space that aims toward truth while respecting differing opinions and open discourse, that discourages polarization, and that curbs the dissemination of violent ideologies that are, by their own words, devoted to harming America.
