The Indianapolis City-County Council votes on July 13. That's days away — and what happens at that meeting could determine whether your neighborhood has any say in what gets built next door.

Council President Maggie Lewis has proposed a moratorium on new data center approvals. It's the right call. Residents on the northwest side and in communities like Martindale-Brightwood have been demanding a pause for months — and for good reason. Data centers strain power grids, generate noise, consume enormous amounts of water, and fundamentally change the character of the neighborhoods they land in. Once they're approved, they're nearly impossible to stop.

Right now, 19 Indiana counties have already paused or banned new data centers. Boone, Madison, and Shelby counties in central Indiana have all acted. Indianapolis hasn't — yet.

The moratorium would give the council time to consult with experts and community members, evaluate environmental and utility impacts, and build real regulations before more facilities are waved through. The full council won't vote until August 10, but the July 13 committee meeting is the critical first step.
