Pass the Illinois Polystyrene Bill: Ban Styrofoam Food Containers in IL

The Issue

Single use plastics have and continue to be a pressing environmental issue.  Single use plastics pose a large problem: they are used for a short period of time, even just mere minutes, but take an excessively long time to decompose.  This has led to the massive buildup of plastic across the globe, from landfills and city streets to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

We have a problem, and this problem can't be solved over night or just by the committed few, it has to happen on a larger scale.  That is why passing legislation, such as the bill in Illinois to ban the use of polystyrene, is so vital.  These are the actions that lead to a cleaner, healthier environment.  We MUST call upon our elected officials to care about these issues and hold them accountable for the role they play in environmental protection.

The Illinois Polystyrene Ban would prohibit the sale and distribution of disposable food containers made in part or entirely of polystyrene foam.  Styrofoam is not recyclable and does not break down easily.  When sunlight or wind finally force pieces apart, they are often consumed by wildlife leading to suffocation, digestion issues, and more.  Styrofoam has a long lifespan due to the fact that it doesn't decompose like other materials, it simply breaks into smaller pieces.  Passing legislation such as this will lessen the amount of Styrofoam entering our landfills, polluting our water, and disrupting our wildlife- all of which are detrimental to the planet and our existence on it.
