The Issue

The case at Cornell University, where a student was reportedly gang-raped while over 50 fraternity members stayed silent in a group chat, proves that campus safety systems are broken. According to reports from NPR and KVCR Public Media, the breakdown of campus oversight allows universities to prioritize their public image over student lives.

This is not an isolated incident.

Legal experts note that this crisis happens everywhere and all the time. Strikingly, Cornell University’s own campus data, revealed that more than 1 in 3 undergraduate women reported experiencing sexual assault during their time at the school. This is a massive jump from 23% just two years prior.* On a national level 13% of all undergraduate students experience rape or sexual assault, yet the vast majority of these incidents are never formally tracked by federal agencies.**

Right now, universities are structurally incentivized to sweep misconduct under the rug to protect their enrollment numbers and reputations. We need a real, binding federal solution to flip these incentives. 🔒

We are petitioning Congress to pass the HALT Campus Sexual Violence Act on Congress.gov. This critical legislation will:

  • Enforce heavy federal fines on universities that try to minimize, ignore, or mishandle sexual violence allegations. 💰
  • Create a permanent, public tracker hosted by the Department of Education detailing all campus violations and climate surveys. 📊
  • Professionalize the reporting process so that investigators use trauma-informed practices instead of intimidating victims.⚖️

Schools must no longer be allowed to protect their brand at the expense of human lives.
