The Issue

As students observing the grave implications of partisan gerrymandering on our local and national community, we are proposing a statutory ban on this practice. Please consider signing our petition to raise support for passing an alternative option, the Freedom to Vote Act.

The Supreme Court leaves the policies revolving around redistricting up to individual states - and as states become less competitive and bipartisan, states draw district maps to divide or clump together parties to give votes in a district to one candidate, meaning individuals lose the power to act.

Passing the Freedom to Vote Act is essential in tackling gerrymandering, particularly when it comes to ensuring communities of color are protected - and that the vote of the individual still matters just as much as the Framers intended it to. It offers plans for structural restrictions on the power to gerrymander. It provides an opportunity - an opportunity for a more equitable America where every voice matters.

Gerrymandering has historically resulted in disproportionate representation and skewed political outcomes. By passing this act, we can ensure that every citizen's vote carries equal weight regardless of their location or ethnicity.

We urge you to hear us, hear this: Let us together uphold democratic values by ensuring fair representation for all citizens regardless of their party affiliation or racial background.

Thank you in advance!
