The Issue

Drug addiction is a complex public health crisis that affects millions of Americans and their families. It is a disease that requires comprehensive and compassionate treatment. Despite significant progress in understanding and addressing addiction, there remains a pressing need for stronger legislation to support prevention, treatment, and recovery efforts.

The purpose of this petition is to urge the United States Congress to pass the Drug Addiction Prevention and Treatment Act. This legislation aims to:

Increase funding for prevention and treatment programs: Allocate substantial resources to evidence-based prevention and treatment programs, including medication-assisted treatment, behavioral therapies, and harm reduction strategies.
Expand access to treatment: Ensure that individuals with substance use disorders have access to affordable and effective treatment options, regardless of their insurance status or geographic location.
Promote research and education: Invest in research to advance our understanding of addiction and develop innovative treatment approaches. Support public education campaigns to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of prevention and treatment.
Address social determinants of health: Recognize the social and economic factors that contribute to addiction and provide resources to address these underlying issues, such as poverty, homelessness, and mental health conditions.
Reduce stigma and discrimination: Promote a culture of compassion and understanding towards individuals struggling with addiction. Combat stigma and discrimination associated with substance use disorders.
Key Provisions of the Act

The Drug Addiction Prevention and Treatment Act should include the following key provisions:

Mandatory funding increases: Allocate a significant portion of the federal budget to substance use disorder prevention and treatment programs.
Medicaid expansion: Expand Medicaid coverage to include substance use disorder treatment services.
Increased access to medication-assisted treatment: Remove barriers to accessing medication-assisted treatment, such as prescription limits and prior authorization requirements.
Support for harm reduction strategies: Provide funding for harm reduction programs, including needle exchange programs and overdose prevention centers.
Investment in research: Increase funding for research on addiction, prevention, and treatment.
Public education campaigns: Develop and implement public education campaigns to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of prevention and treatment.
Addressing social determinants of health: Provide resources to address social and economic factors that contribute to addiction, such as poverty, homelessness, and mental health conditions.
