Pass Shannon’s law to ensure safer streets Nationwide
The Issue
On October 27, 2025, my beloved sister Shannon was struck and killed while walking along NW Blitchton Road in Ocala, Florida. That road, shrouded in darkness without adequate lighting, sidewalks, or pedestrian signage, has been a silent perpetrator of numerous accidents, claiming far too many lives, including Shannon's. She was only trying to make it to her destination safely that morning, but the infrastructure failed her, and the lack of safety measures on that road is to blame.
This tragedy should never have happened, and it's a stark reminder of how crucial safe street infrastructure is. Roads like NW Blitchton should be safe environments for pedestrians, not potential death traps. Shannon's tragic death must serve as a call to action, a catalyst for change, so no family has to endure such a loss again.
We urge the Florida Legislature and Governor to enact "Shannon’s Law.” This law aims to make roads safer by mandating:
• The installation of adequate street lighting on all state and county roads that see pedestrian traffic. Such lighting would drastically improve visibility, reducing the risk of accidents, especially during nighttime.
• The construction of sidewalks and placement of reflective signage in high-risk areas. Sidewalks provide a dedicated and safe space for pedestrians, significantly enhancing their safety.
• Regular safety audits and speed enforcement on notoriously dangerous corridors. Ensuring that roads are constantly monitored for safety compliance is essential in preventing potential accidents.
Passing "Shannon's Law" will be a step forward in addressing the preventable neglect of our roads. My sister’s life should stand for something greater. It should stand for safety, for change, and for the protection of countless others.
Join us in turning our grief into action. Support the movement to enact "Shannon’s Law" for safer streets in Florida and to honor Shannon’s memory. Sign this petition today and help save lives. Together, we can demand the change that will prevent future tragedies.
