Pass RI Senate Bill S2648 to Support Sexual Abuse Survivors

Pass RI Senate Bill S2648 to Support Sexual Abuse Survivors
The Issue
As a former student athlete, I carry the burden of a harrowing experience that occurred over two decades ago. Sexual assault and harassment left an indelible mark on my life, and for many years, I have struggled in silence. Unfortunately, I am not alone. Numerous survivors in Rhode Island face similar battles, bound by an unjust statute of limitations that silences their quest for justice.
Rhode Island Senate Bill S2648 offers a beacon of hope, aiming to abolish the statute of limitations on child sexual abuse cases. This crucial legislative change is essential to give survivors the time they need to process, heal, and ultimately, to seek justice against their perpetrators. The current limitations fail to consider the long-term psychological effects these traumatic experiences have on individuals, often delaying their ability to come forward.
According to Child USA, the average age an individual discloses their childhood sexual abuse is 52 years old. This statistic alone illuminates the inadequacies of existing legislative measures and highlights the necessity for reform. By passing Senate Bill S2648, Rhode Island can align with states that recognize the importance of validating survivors' experiences while holding offenders accountable, regardless of when the abuse occurred.
Furthermore, ending the statute of limitations would significantly contribute to the prevention of further abuse. Perpetrators would no longer escape justice due to arbitrary time constraints, and this could deter potential offenders, knowing that victims have an indefinite window to come forward.
For the safety and validation of all survivors in East Providence and across Rhode Island, it is imperative that this bill be passed. We need to create an environment where survivors feel supported, heard, and empowered to take action without fear of legal barriers.
Join us in urging Rhode Island legislators to stand by survivors and support the passage of Senate Bill S2648. Your signature can make a difference, ensuring that justice is accessible for all, regardless of how much time has passed. Please sign this petition today, and be a part of a transformative movement for justice and healing in our community.
