Pass Regina’s Law: Protect Pets From Veterinary Negligence in Michigan

Pass Regina’s Law: Protect Pets From Veterinary Negligence in Michigan
The Issue
Every day, pets across Michigan suffer because our laws treat them as property—not family. If a veterinarian injures, over medicates, or even kills a pet, the only compensation owners are legally entitled to is the animal’s “market value.” That’s it.
This has to change.
Regina’s Sentient Companion Animal Protection Act (SCAPA) will:
Reclassify pets as sentient beings under Michigan law
Allow owners to seek emotional damages in cases of preventable harm or death
Make intentional poisoning or overmedication a felony
Require full transparency from veterinary clinics
Create oversight that actually protects animals—not corporations
Keep veterinarians accountable
Four months ago, Regina was diagnosed with Cushing’s disease and an adrenal tumor. What followed wasn’t just a medical journey — it was a betrayal by the very system meant to protect her.
I did everything right. I asked the hard questions. I followed the protocols. I brought Regina in for bloodwork, scans, and medication — trusting the professionals to give her the care she deserved. But instead of transparency, I was given half-truths, withheld records, and conflicting information. I was told things were “slightly elevated,” only to find out later the numbers told a much darker story — one that was omitted, minimized, and potentially life-threatening.
When I finally got copies of her test results, everything changed. I discovered clear evidence that Regina's diagnosis was being mishandled. Her numbers had been dangerously abnormal from the start. Yet the treatment decisions being made didn’t reflect that reality — and they certainly didn’t prioritize her life.
I realized I wasn’t dealing with just one mistake. I was dealing with a system of silence, avoidance, and misdirection. The deeper I dug, the more I uncovered: conflicting prescriptions, misleading diagnoses, staff who couldn’t answer basic questions, and an endless circle of deflection when I pushed for the truth.
All Regina needed was honesty. All I wanted was clarity. Instead, I got gaslit and stonewalled while time ticked away against a tumor we weren’t aggressively treating.
This isn't just about my dog — it’s about every pet parent who’s ever had to wonder if they’re being told the full story. It's about holding clinics accountable when profit and protocol take precedence over life.
Regina is still fighting — and so am I.
I’m asking for your signature because this isn’t just her battle anymore. It's about protecting every animal who can't speak for themselves and every family who deserves the truth. I will not stop until there are real changes in veterinary accountability, transparency, and ethical care standards.
Help me make noise. Help me make change. Help me fight for Regina — and for every animal who deserves better.
