On June 21, 2024, the U.S. Supreme Court made a crucial decision in favor of public safety by upholding a gun ban for domestic abusers. This ruling has significant implications for states with Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) laws, commonly known as ‘red flag’ laws. As I contemplate this pivotal ruling and the memory of my son, Henry D. Teuteberg, whose life was tragically taken from us. Henry’s story underscores the urgency of implementing and strengthening ERPOs nationwide, especially in states like Wisconsin where such protection orders are absent.
Henry’s Story: A Heartbreaking Reality
My son, Henry, fell victim to a situation that no parent should face. Caught between safeguarding him and adhering to a court order, I grappled with an impossible choice. If only an ERPO had been in place, it could have saved his life. Henry deserved the chance at safety that ERPOs offer—a chance that countless others desperately need.
A Call to Action
Let us honor Henry’s memory by advocating for stronger ERPO laws. We must bridge partisan divides, expand access to mental health services, educate the public about ERPOs, and address concerns while preserving constitutional rights. Together, we can prevent future tragedies and spare other families the pain we endure.
ERPOs aren’t just legal mechanisms; they are lifelines for those in a crisis. Join me in this crucial mission, and let Henry’s legacy be one of hope and change. #HenrysLaw
